Peak State

A peak state is a heightened state of mental and emotional functioning in which you feel

your best and perform at your best. 

 

In a peak state, you are focused, energized, and in control of your thoughts and emotions.

We all have had times when everything seems to flow effortlessly.

We can be in a meeting and are presenting with confidence and can answer questions or come up with new ideas with ease.

Or we have days when we are really productive and get more things done than the rest of the week combined.

But then there are times when we are not motivated to get started and when we finally start working everything is slow with a lot of resistance.

 

Or we are in a meeting and it feels like a block when someone is asking us a question and we then come up with a great answer once we are back at the desk.

 

So how come at some times we are able to be in a peak state but then at other times we are not?

How To Change Your State

Perhaps the most important skill in business is the ability to change your state.​

 

Some example could be:

  • Become motivated when you are feeling tired

  • Become focused when you are distracted

  • Feel calm and confident when you are nervous​

So what is a state and how can you change it?​

Changing your state is on a fundamental level a game of neurochemistry. You have probably heard of a number of the molecules that are effectively run our lives, such as dopamine and adrenaline. A state of mind can be described as a cocktail of such molecules.

Our bodies are producing neurotransmitters and there are a number of way that we can influence what is being produced.

 

One powerful way to achieve a peak state is through meditation. Meditation involves focusing your attention on a single point, such as your breath. This helps to calm your mind and changes the brain wave frequency in a beneficial way. 

Another way to achieve a peak state is through exercising. Regular physical activity has been shown to improve mood, reduce anxiety, and enhance cognitive function.

However, perhaps the most effective way to change your state is through nutrition. What we eat effects our mode and state of mind and has a direct impact on the neurotransmitter being produced.
